pct, day six
start: 80 miles
end: 101 miles
oof today was tough. the goal was to hike as far as possible so that tomorrow we have a short hike to warner springs.
we woke up at 5:30 am and got ready with anna and matt. they both left before we were ready to go with the hope that we would catch up to them quickly. we left camp around 7 am.
olga and i chatted for the first part of the hike and then called our loved ones. before we knew it, we were 3 miles in and feeling great.
the next 7 were a bit tougher, we continued to talk and hike but we hadn’t caught up to anyone and in the last few miles we were getting hungry.
at about mile 9 we ran into matt (finally!) and we knew we were 1 mile from water. about a half mile later we ran into anna and we all went to the water cache together. it was .25 miles off the trail but nice to fill up our water and have a spot to eat.
we rested for almost an hour. we made lunch (mashed potatoes, a twix bar, ritz crackers, cold pizza for me, and salmon for olga), took of our shoes, and dried out our sleeping bags from the condensation the previous night.
the last 10 miles were difficult for me (and i think everyone). knowing we were traversing more miles, constant wind and cold, and hilly terrain. we were able to ask each other stupid questions to keep our minds distracted, but it still felt like it wouldn’t end. we tried singing songs, anna rapped 8 mile and it gave us all a boost of energy.
9 miles in (after lunch) we hit the 100 mile mark. this was huge for the through hikers, they hit the triple digit mark! we took pictures and celebrated.
a mile later we were at the campsite where a few other groups had already set up. we ate dinner (mac & cheese and ramen), giddy from the long day. olga and i are now in the tent trying to convince the fly inside to escape.
we are 7-9 miles from warner springs so we should get there early tomorrow.
