pct, day three
start – 30 miles (kitchen creek)
end – 47 miles
i think today was my favorite day yet.
we woke up this morning around 6:30 am to frost on our bags, clothes, and tent. yesterday we tried to wash our clothes and they still had not dried. this was especially stupid for me because i had decided to wash both of my sports bras and didn’t have a single not-freezing-cold bra.
but we put on our wet clothes, olga borrowed dry socks from our new australian friend matt, we ate some oatmeal, drank some coffee and tea, and we were off for the day. we had 11 miles to get to mount laguna, where there was an outdoor store, a general store, and restaurants.
we started off feeling great (i think the food and caffeine really helped). at around mile 2 our friend matt caught up with us. we asked him to start telling us his life story and the miles flew by. soon later another hiker, brad “paddles”, caught up with us too. he also told us his life story, then olga, and we were quickly at 13 miles and had climbed 8k in elevation.
at mount laguna we went to the “pine hill lodge” and feasted on burgers, fries, mac and cheese, and peach cobbler. the outdoor retailer had closed (permanently?) so we just went to the general store and stocked up on mostly food.
we left mount laguna in search of a campsite (with the map showing there were many 2-4 miles away). our trek started windy and peaked when we reached a wind tunnel and matt’s hat flew off. it could have been terrifying but we were just giggling about it.
a couple miles later we found a less windy spot and decided to call it home for the night. brad originally had planned to cowboy camp (sleep without a tent) but is now pitching his tent and trying to race the sunset.
