distance: 13.1 miles
time: 2:10:29 (pr!)
this saturday, i woke up at 3:30 am (!) to leave the house by 4:15 am (!!) to be in north hollywood by 4:45 am (!!!). why so early, you ask? the hollywood half marathon starts at 6 am. while getting up early was a pain, it was nice to finish the race and be home before 10 am.
we got to the start line at about 5:05 am, where we found other fleet feet runners from the marathon training group and tried to stay warm until the race started. at 5:45 am, we headed toward our coral. the corals were decently marked, we ended up in coral 4 even though we were supposed to be in coral 3, but at least we were able to start together.
we crossed the start line at 6:08 am. i can’t express enough how much fun it was to run a race with my team. we all ended up finishing at different times, but we were together for the start and finish, and waving at each other as we crossed paths during the race.
the course was not my favorite. there was a lot of doubling back. this was nice to keep track of everyone, but a bit mundane. my biggest complaint about the course was that you run past the finish line at around mile 11.5 and have to run away from the finish line until 12.2 or so. i was also spoiled by the amazing fans at the LA marathon. for this race, there were very few fans.
i ran with my friend amy until mile 9 when we split off. i was so happy to have her with me for as long as i did. our mentor bear ended up running with each team member as well. as soon as i split off from amy, my knee started bugging me (so i may need a short break from running to let my knee fully heal). it didn’t stop me though, i didn’t stop until the finish line. i usually start running a little faster 1 mile from the finish line, but for this race i didn’t have the energy. i only started sprinting with about .3 miles left.
i did get a pr! my previous pr was 2:15:59 so i beat it by over 5 minutes. my goal was (and still is) under 2 hours, but there will be many more races.
