last weekend i traveled to san fransisco for a kickball tournament.
the trip started around noon on friday. a* and i went to lax for our 1:35 flight to sfo (*privacy). everything was on schedule and going well, until the captain came out of the plane as soon as it started boarding. we were told that there was a part on the plane that was broken and we would have to wait 3-4 hours to fly out. the entire plane tried to switch to a 3:30 flight to sfo, but we realized this too late and instead picked the 2:20 to san jose. at least we will be up there, we thought. as soon as we were boarding our san jose flight, we both received calls that our old flight was leaving at 3:20. oh well, we thought, i am sure it will be later than that. (spoiler alert: it wasn’t.)
we arrived in san jose and made arrangements for a rental car. we were told we could drop it off blocks from the hotel in san fransisco by 7 pm. it was 4 pm by this point. 3 hours for a 1.5 hour drive? not only will we be fine, but we’ll have time for a stop at target (for gatorades/snacks/etc) and peanut butter pie.
side note: in 2010, my parents picked me up at the san jose airport for a family reunion. i was hungry when they picked me up, so we used yelp (still relatively new at this time) and found the smoking pig bbq. the meal was delicious, and it ended with this heavenly peanut butter pie.
back to last weekend. we got in our rental car and immediately got directions to the smoking pig. 1.3 miles and a few minutes in the restaurant later, we walked out with two pieces of peanut butter pie, to go.
we stopped at target on the way, and soon realized that our 7 pm deadline to get the car into the city was actually a 5 pm deadline that we had already missed. many calls to customer service later and we finally dropped the car off and uber-ed to the hotel at 6:50 pm.
the first pitch of the giants/braves game was at 7:15 pm, so we didn’t see it, but we were at least at the stadium for it. we got some beers, a vegetarian hot dog for a (which she said was delicious and got a 2nd before we left), and i got nachos from tres (which i thought was the same one as in half moon bay but sadly it is not). the game was really fun, we left in the 8th inning though because it was cold day and we were exhausted from our travel adventure.
saturday and sunday were filled with all day kickball tournaments on treasure island. saturday was a coed tournament where my team made it out of pool play but lost in the first round to the team that won the tournament. sunday was a women’s tournament, where my team made it out of pool play but lost in the first round to the team that won the tournament. oh well.
a and i tried to walk to the edge of the island on saturday to take pictures of the san fransisco skyline, but as we were walking to the end of the islalnd, we heard a chainsaw-like noise from inside a trailer park. after hearing it for the second time, we quickly turned around and headed back to the kickball fields.
on sunday, on the way back to the city, we stopped (in a car) at the edge of the island. the view from treasure island was beautiful. apparently it’s a popular place to go for engagement photo shoots, and i can see why.
our flight home was delayed as well but luckily our standby worked and we got on an earlier flight (it felt like we had won the lottery).
